Osteopathic Medical Mentoring

When I took my oath as an Osteopathic Physician, I made many promises.  One promise was:

“I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art.  To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me.”

If you look up the word “doctor” in the dictionary, you will find many definitions, two of which are as follows:

-          a person licensed to practice medicine, as a physician, surgeon, dentist, or veterinarian.

-          an eminent scholar and teacher.

With such a mandate, you now understand why I am so involved in teaching here at Well Spring Health Center.  I not only see every visit with every patient as an opportunity to teach, but I choose to take into my office individuals choosing to learn the art of Osteopathy.

Occasionally I have a high school or college student spend part of a day with me to learn about Osteopathy.  More often than not, I precept, or mentor, Osteopathic Medical Students for a month of clinical training during their third or fourth year of medical school.  Medicine is one of those age-old professions that has classroom training, but the true heart of the learning process comes from working with someone within the profession, learning the art and philosophy of it, not just the facts.  Keep in mind that learning goes both ways.  I often am able to learn new techniques and information from the students as they bring in new ideas and up-to-date information from the classrooms they have just left.

This month I have the opportunity to work with a young physician, Dr. Joy P., just about to finish her specialty residency training in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.  I feel honored to have the privilege to participate in each new physician’s training.

Improving Your Mental Health Through Photography

Improving_Your_Menta.zip (3328 KB)

It has been years since I've picked up a camera and taken pictures of whatever caught my eye, but over the past year, our family has gotten back into photography. And in doing so, I noticed something pretty incredible - I couldn't look through the camera and not see beauty. The process of taking a picture takes you down that path...a path that can't help but be uplifting.

I've been suggesting this to Joel, our son, that he ought to remember that the camera can give you a different perspective on the world around you. The camera is a wonderful tool to help heal. The examples in the gallery above are what we've seen this past year.

And with this idea in hand, the “Well Spring Health Center” would like to announce that it will be supporting the formation of a photography club here in Aroostook County. The focus will be more on the artistry of taking pictures and not particularly on the equipment. Some of the best and most memorable photographs we have in our family were taking with very cheap and simple cameras.

We'll be inviting the most experienced photographers in the area to talk about their work, as well as introducing educational material that is available on the web and exchanging ideas and techniques. We've got the space for a pretty good sized group of people and since we are in the mall, it should be pretty central to most everyone that would like to attend. We are planning the first meeting in mid-September, so keep an eye on on this blog for more information.

Raphael Gribetz - Meditation Program

Well Spring Health Center was pleased to sponsor Mr. Raphael Gribetz, a highly-trained meditation instructor who has been very involved with meditation practice, awareness training, and the application of meditation practice in daily living.

Mr. Gribetz has been a practitioner of meditation for the past twelve years and has had amazing success in the utilization of meditation as a way to understand our habitual patterns.  Mr. Gribetz teaches that through meditation we learn to look closer at our habitual patterns and in so doing, initiate the possibility for change.

We at the Well Spring Health Center were very excited to offer this program to the communities in Aroostook County.

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised both at the response from the community and in the actual program. Mr Gribetz held four classes on Tuesday nights from 7 to 8:30 pm which we filled on short notice through email communications.

Mr. Gribetz's simple ways of relating practical application of meditation practices in my daily life through discussion, poetry, and example are something I still think about and apply now, some three weeks later.

This first run of the program was mostly a test to see what would work within the context of the Well Spring Health Center and what was needed by those who attended. This August Mr. Gribetz plans to return to develop the program further.

If you are interested in this type of personal journey, please feel free to contact us by phone at (207) 764-6880.
